Panama Restaurant Review: Las
Palmas
|
Las Palmas is a swanky new joint on
Calle Uruguay, a popular nightlife area in the heart of Panama
City’s banking district. From the outside, it’s quite obvious
the place is intended for the chic crowd; a white façade with
some high dollar autos parked in front, I knew this wasn’t going
to be easy on my wallet. However, since my business partner has
been allowing me certain liberties with his retirement funds the
past few months, I thought a good meal was the least I could do.
A giant rock-turned-art piece sits at the entrance and makes a
bold statement. It was pretty dead inside, even for a Monday
night, but the wait staff was extremely pleasant and sharply
dressed. I felt like I was in a Miami Vice episode, circa 1986.
That or in Malibu in the mid-90’s. Stark white walls, some funky
art and a general sense of slick sophistication filled the air.
Curiously absent was the smell of anything from the kitchen,
since we were obviously the first table of the night. We were
seated in a comfy half booth, half table thingy, then were
handed a pretty impressive menu and separate card showing
specials for the evening.
My amigo Jim and I both ordered up a glass of wine and settled
on the pork medallion special of the evening for $16. It was a
fancy sounding plate with some apple encrusted pork, various
vegetables and some delicately described sauce. I am not a food
critic, so I can’t tell you much besides it tasting pretty good.
My only concern was that for pork, it looked a bit undercooked.
We both finished everything and while Jim sipped a Gran Marnier,
I ordered a chocolate mousse and had an espresso. Final damage:
$85 with tip.
I’d rate the whole experience a 6 of 10 and probably won’t go
back unless I’m really, really trying to impress a date. The
ambience reminding me of how much I enjoyed Miami Vice in my
youth (remember Crocket’s pet alligator?!) was really the high
point of the experience.
