Welcome To The Jungle: Panama
Rainforest
|
It was time to leave the confines of
the city and enter the wilderness. Except this wilderness is
unique because we didn’t even have to leave the city to enjoy
it. Nope, no muddy atv trails here, just good old corridor norte
and we were there.
The 265 hectares Parque Nacional Metropolitano lies completely
with in Panama City limits. Only Cleveland, Ohio has something
similar to it. It’s a $2 cab ride from our neighborhood in El
Congrejo. But make sure when you go make sure to tell the driver
to drop you off at the visitors center and not the ranger
station. You need to go to the visitor center to buy your ticket
which costs $1 to $2 depending on who you ask.
A little confusing if your Spanish isn’t great.
The park has two main trails – the Titi Monkey Trail and the
Nature Trail. While on our hike I spotted an animal called a
Neque which looks like a giant rodent. We also saw a trail of
leafcutter ants hauling away their cargo. A Titi Monkey was
spotted hanging around a tree at the first of the two
promontories. Apparently you can see sloths, anteaters and over
250 bird species.
The views the park has to offer are equally enticing. On one of
the lookout points you can see the Panama City skyline and the
canal. This is by far the coolest city park I have ever been to
and I highly recommend anyone who travels to Panama City to
visit.
